While pursuing a degree in education at the University of Minnesota in the mid 60's, I happened to sign up for a pottery class. My instructor was Warren MacKenzie, who had me so excited about working with clay that I signed up for two more of his courses. I graduated with a degree in elementary education, a minor in art, and a passion for pottery. I later had the opportunity to work one summer with Rich Abnet, who encouraged me to get started. I continued making pots most summers until my retirement. I now enjoy working in my Stillwater home studio.

I create pots primarily for my own pleasure. The initial thrill of throwing the pot on the wheel has gravitated toward excitement in modifying the thrown form and also in hand building. Working with stoneware is a wonderful tactile experience and I want to share that sense with others through the forms I create. I try to find warm glazes that provide a contrast when "breaking" over a ridge in the form. I fire my pots in a catenary-arch gas-fired kiln in heavy reduction to 2350 degrees. The resulting pots are functional, handsome and durable for a lifetime of enjoyable use.
